Nervous system conversation is all the rage right now and sometimes when these topics start to trend then it just becomes a lot of noise and oversaturated. HOWEVER I do feel this topic is important when it comes to our healing journey and I can share from my own personal journey. I started researching this topic which led me to trauma training after years of circling the mountain of going to my family doctor only to get placed on antidepressants to searching out a holistic doctor to be put on expensive supplements to not understanding why I still felt the way I felt only to find out it was from years and years of being stuck in a fight or flight state. None of the things I tried was bad whatsoever I am grateful for each season and I do still take supplements to help support my physical health. It makes me even more passionate in helping other women in their healing journey.
The other morning while I was cleaning out my closet and asking the Lord questions I really felt Him telling me that He is the best nervous system regulator. I was like now that is truth I can absolutely come into agreement with. Jesus was such a great teacher on this topic. After hearing about the death of His dear cousin, John the Baptist, Jesus went to a deserted place to mourn. He didn’t have long before the crowds followed Him but He was able to show compassion and minister to them in my opinion from a regulated grounded place because He spent that time alone with God. You can read this story yourself in the book of Matthew. This is only one of the many examples of Jesus getting away alone with the Father.
So I’m first and foremost always going to recommend time with the Lord number one when it comes to finding that sense of calm. Some examples are meditating on scripture, journaling your prayers and gratitude, verse mapping, and my most favorite singing scripture just to name a few.
Some other practical ways to calm your nervous system is again singing or humming. When I worked in banking I would often start humming during times of stress having no idea it was my body’s way to calm down. So singing alone is helpful but singing in a group especially songs of praise is so amazing! It’s so fascinating how in Colossians 3 it’s talking about putting on the new self and down in verse 16 it talks about letting the spoken word of God have it’s home within you as you teach and train one another with wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God. The word of God, singing, and gratitude all in one verse. SO SO GOOD!! There is truly something so special about corporate worship when we are all collectively giving thanks and praise together! So powerful!
Ok let’s talk not so spiritual practical ways to find that sense of calm. (although you may find me turning it into spiritual because it’s what I do)
I’ll add this too that I figured out but sour candy will help shift your brain from anxiety/fear driven thoughts to the taste of the candy. You can use this as a tool to help with taking thoughts captive and mind renewal. Kinda fun if you like sour patch kids like I do. This also helps in the moment of stress just like humming does. So if your job is stressful and you can’t always get away to regroup this could be an idea to help calm you down. Stress balls, fidgets, anything sensory is a great option.
Of course I will put a shameless plug in for my role as Life Coach. If you are looking for a Life Coach to walk along side of you in your healing journey or interested in understanding what it would look like, I work with women one on one. Send me a message and we can see if we would be a good fit to work together. Another option is joining my Patreon monthly membership for soul care. There I share videos with bible study, journaling prompts, reflection, nervous system exercises, etc.
In closing, in a world that feels heavy in the midst of our busy lives I pray this helps you in some way to find a sense of calm in your day. May we learn to slow down and be still living lives from a healthier place of wholeness. We sure show up better for one another when we are regulated don’t we, friend?
